Sketch A0905 - Shorts Creek Falls

On a hike to Shorts Creek Falls at Fintry, BC one hour drive south-west of Vernon, BC.

I went hiking with Lisa, our children, my two sister in-laws, Kristina and Angela and my future brother in-law, Neil. It was a spectacular sunny Okanogan day. We explored the heritage dairy farm at the base of the hike, we had particular interest in this today, as I had just met Neil for the first time a few days ago and he is a dairy farmer so I was learning a few things about how the dairy business works. The hike was 383 timber stairs with beautiful lookout points, we definitely will be back. I always enjoy, as do many, the falling and crashing of water with the negative ions giving me a spine tingling rush and a sense of euphoria. Jackson was filled with excitement, as at four months of age this would have been his first falling water experience so his senses where flooded with new sensations. Elizabeth now more than two years of age has seen many and was more interested with the rhythm and challenge of the stairs and the goal to make it to the top. It is interesting to see the different stages of development and perhaps personalities shaping what they find intriguing in a particular space.

On a visit to Kekuli Bay Provincial Park, a 15 minute drive south of Vernon, BC.

This is the first in a succession of weekly blogs featuring half hour concept sketches to be used as reference for commissioned and otherwise prospective paintings.  I am integrating my sketching into our Sunday family adventures.  Lisa and I find experiencing nature physically is our personal connection to spirituality.  God means many things to many people, and to me this is where I feel part of something that inspires awe and perhaps even a sense of the divine.  So I have decided to combine this exploration with my artwork in an attempt to communicate to others these moments, as they are experienced that day.  I attempt to encapsulate the impressions of color I see created by the energy in these spaces at these moments.  My artwork is a representation of the amalgamation of both what I feel and what I see.  I use my photographs as a loose reference after the initial sketch however the original image is what I use to catch the essence of that instant in that place.  Kekuli Bay Park is quick access to the pleasures of being lakeside in a fold of arid grass fields.  We enjoyed a stroll on the trail and a picnic in the park.  To sketch, I perched near a bird platform towering 50 feet above, with the mother circling in suspicion of my intent.  The lake of glass lay undisturbed for 8km to horizon where it finds the small community of Oyama, BC.
